Former Children’s Commissioner for England Anne Longfield is mounting a legal challenge against TikTok and its use of children’s data. This is another step in attempts to keep children’s data safe online, following on from the European Commission publishing 2030 Digital Compass: the European way for the Digital Decade, in which the Commission gave a sense of its digital priorities and the UNCRC’s adoption of general comment No. 25 on children’s rights in relation to the digital environment.
The claim against TikTok is being filed on behalf of millions of children in the UK and EU who have used the hugely popular video-sharing app.
If successful, the children affected could each be owed thousands of pounds.
TikTok said the case was without merit and it would fight it.
