On the day that Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak announced his support for young people, the Mayor of London’s Education and Youth team launched its new report ‘London’s post-16 trajectories’.
It recommends better careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) and less emphasis on the academic route and more on alternative career paths more on all qualifications and pathways available, including the opportunities that colleges and apprenticeships can provide. Children and young people are led to feel that these other routes are inferior, but those who take them up find that they are more down to earth and helpful.
The report also recommends a more structured 3 year programme for 16 to 19 year olds.
The chancellor’s support for careers guidance and in work training is therefore timely. Let’s hope it gets to the places it’s most needed.
